Much like the recent storm swept through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City overwhelmed the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their title credentials as they reinforced their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Setbacks for United

This scoreline marked successive Women's Super League defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s ability to balance league and European soccer with a limited roster has been a widely debated subject since they qualified for the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this fortitude. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired all game, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Skinner had tried to make changes with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all brought energy, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such loading concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a exhibition of the quality from City whose energetic attack played with and dismantled the opposition with a sublime first half display that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors struggling. Prior to this fixture, United had let in just few in this WSL season but they collapsed in the face of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot past the post. The Red Devils had several forays forward, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the flanks but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated the ball, taunting their opponents and trying to lure them of their organization.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's seventh headed goal of the campaign.

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was able to advance through the midfield from defense, the pitch opened up for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before sending a accurate low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the room to drive a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the break as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the post, but the away team were offensively poor and failed to register a one shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema through ball sent Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any side who finished above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against Arsenal and United to put them in a strong situation after the opening fixtures.
