Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability
The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
