Everyone Are Invited to Become the Extra Haim Sisters Member.
"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."
However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Several high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the position.
The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.
Like all the greatest groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals often depict them striding in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."
"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."
"So all is invited to be the next member of Haim."
Historic Recognition
The trio have called into a break, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.
They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.
"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"
The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.
"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."
Heartbreak and Laughter
The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.
The lyrics detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they aspire to be.
"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Refinement of Sound
That newfound toughness required a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.
"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."
Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie
The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.
A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."
A Secure Path
One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.
They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.
But the sister act will always be their primary focus.
"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
